I am a little confused about the tomatoes. Why do you need the stewed, crushed, and sauce in this recipe? Does it change the texture if you only use one type of tomato product, or do you need all three to get the exact texture you want in the dish? It sounds very tasty.

I prefer making large meatballs, to smaller ones. I use a recipe with a brown onion and wine based sauce. The meat ball are like small meat loafs and I serve them over mashed potatoes.

I am a huge crock pot cooker and make meatballs and spaghetti sauce at least once a month during the winter. I would suggest adding the meatballs last after the sauce has completed cooked. You can also use prepared spaghetti sauce and add extra spices. Oh, soooo good.
